Advisory: Possible scam attempt through email.

Dear Nixle User,

A Macungie resident reported he received an email from "Settlement Services". The email contained the resident's social security number and demanded the resident send $1150.00 to avoid prosecution. The resident fortunately did not fall for this old scam attempt but was concerned that his actual social security number was included in the email.

It was suggested that the resident check his credit report from known reputable credit reporting agencies and contact the FTC if he felt his identity was stolen. At this time not other emails or calls have been received and it is suspected the author of this email was attempting to scare the resident in to releasing $1150. This scare tactic is very common and at times is successful. A little knowledge and some questioning would keep you from becoming a victim. Please contact any Macungie Police Officer if you have any questions.

A copy/paste version of the email is attached. We have edited the residents name and social security number for security purposes but the remainder of the email is unedited. Note the grammar and spelling. This is clearly a bogus email and not well written.

Ihave all the proofs with all of your personal details in the affidavit with me.So before it gets downloaded inside the court house with the legal proceduresin your name and on your social security number with hampering your creditratings Just reply me back whether you want to put a hold on this case file andsettle it outside the courthouse with the settlement amount and close it orelse you want to take this matter inside the court house with the penalty feesand judge fees and court house fees and you may end up in a legal mess.

We are informing you that this isyour final reminder Email and opportunity to make payment. Unless we have yourcheck for the amount $1150.00.within the next 48 hours, or anacceptable proposal for payments is obtained forthwith, we shall immediatelycommence legal actions against you. If the matter goes that far, you will alsobe liable for all attorney fees and court costs .such and actions will alsoadversely affect your credit ratings.

Because your file is inside the court house our records clearlyindicate that this amount due for services rendered and that we are entitled tocommence collection procedures should it be necessary.
